Recent work
27 January 2012
Recently I have been working with the units Themes and Responses and Contemporary Technologies. Its been a stressfull time since late september last year til now with all the work basically stealing my social life. Went home for two weeks in the christmas holidays which gave me a nice break from work. Good to see friends and family again.Looking forward to the easter holidays...
Themes and Responses
For Themes and responses I ended up making 3 final prints . Counstructing landscape in fishtanks. While Constructing the landscapes I am focusing on the memory and connection to a dream world setting, and try to create a fantasy place. Taking inspiration from artists such as Kim Keever, Mariele Neudecker, Terry Taylor and a book called Unconscious Phantasy of Riccardo steiner where he writes
" When we say that phantasies are not real, we mean that they don't have a physical existence in the world around us. In other words, we mean that we can't see them or hear them or touch them. If we can see or hear or touch something and, better still, smell it and taste it, then we have little doubt that about its reality. If not, its reality is brought into question. So one criterion is complicated by the fact that some people see and hear things that nobody else can see or hear."
I started of working in a small glass bole to see how it would be to work underwater. The first attempt turned out good.
This created the ground of my work and is what i kept building on. As the material floats it was simply just to flip the image around and do some minor editing.
I found out that i needed more space as it was to find small enough materials to fit the bole and I wanted more depht in the images. At home we had a aquarium in the attic and because i did not have a large fish-tank in England i choose to use the christmas holidays to get the final prints done. This is how it turned out:
This is how the workspace looked like:
Contemporary Technologies
Contemporary Technologies is the most frustrating unit I have been working with so far. Many times Themes and Responses got the main priority because I simply did not work with this unit. In the end i think it sorted out fine. For the unit each student had to hand in 5mb of data. I did not matter what as long as it was no more than 5mb. After everybody had handed in, we got back the folder of what everybody together had submitted and out of that we were going to make artwork. I started of with some recreation thoughts in a surreal illustrated way, but it did not really lead to more than this image
The folder was filled with all sorts of different strange things. In the end i came up with some dystopian, surreal, futuristic images.
I ended up with printing this on a A0 print as the final for this unit.
Summer Term
08 May 2011
First, sorry for not putting enough effort on keeping the website updated, been quite busy the last few months. What I have been working with is:
Image Time
Historiographies and Aesthetics of Photography
Digital Management and Production
Image Time
I am still working with the Image time unit, the hand in is may 13th. I do think that i have control over this unit. Looking forward to finish this and go back home. I am in this unit working with the use of slowing down time and the use of frame rate. That we have created cameras that are able to capture something that humans can not thinking of frames per second. Slowing down time givers us the opertunity to study the moment end extend the feelings of what we are seeing. The reasearch have been focused on human and animal eyesight, the high speed photography work of Harold Edgerton and slown down vdieos if Bill Viola and Ori Gersht. Also some thoughts of time from Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and a glims of a recording of Justin Bieber's "U Smile" only 800% slower, which actually is realxing. If not check this out This will cheer you up. Also a bit of all the random high fps videos thats around on vimeo youtube and other video sites. After much back and forth and after allot of inspiring youtube and vimeo slow motion videos, it came to that i would use firebreathing to show the detail. At the time I did not have any camera that would be able to shoot at the frame rate I wanted, so i found EXILIM EX-FH100 on amazon, for a cheap 150 pounds. It shoots 420 at a good enough quality for me to use in my unit. I tried out some stuff to get used to the camera:
The final video will be a multiscreened firebreathing slow motion video. I am going to shoot some more angles and a bit of adjusting but it will be something like this:
Historiographies and Aesthetics of Photography
Over to the Historiographies and Aesthetics of Photography unit the final work is to write an 2500 word essay. My topic ended up beeing a comparison of the two books "War against War!" also called "krieg dem kriege!" of Ernst Friedrich from 1924, and "Soldiers - The Nineties" of Wolfgang Tillmans. Both books are topics of war, one more focused of it's horror than the other. Did not expect this kind of photographs when i blindly accepted to write the comparison of these two books. I had to take several brakes during the reading of "War against War!" as the photographs are showing the horrifying inguries and effects of the First World War. I have a feeling that i will be grilled by my teacher, as he has earlier written an article where he analyzes the book "Soldiers". Link. Handed the essay in yesterday, hoping for the best.
Digital Management and Production
In Digital Management Production I countinued my study of landscapes. This time using sample images found on google image. The lanscapes are photoshoped and made to represent real places in the world based on how I have made my own thought about some places I have never been but got information of throu the media to show the stereotype view on some places on earth. They are not ment to be all the way realistic, the thoughts we create of a landscape are often exaggerated and for that not seem pure realistic. Our experiences of seeing a landscape becomes so strong that a camera itself can never recreate the whole feeling of seeing a beautiful landscape. This unit is mostly to get us to work with the digital part that the university offers, learn a bit of basics in photoshop and keep us out from the darkroom for a while. These are the final results:

Malaysia Canada
Pripyat Northpole
Nevada Desert
Photography and Realism
14 february 2011
I am finally finished with the Photography and realism unit. These pictures were my starting points:

I ended up with a project were I took a series of landscape photographs. The serie is called "Seconds away from home". These are the final results:

25200 seconds away from home

2160 seconds away from home

1800 seconds away from home
Worked alot with this unit, and i am happy with the result. Hoping to get a good grade. The newest is that i got my hands on a MacbookPro, nice to get to think about something else for a while. Going to use it mostly for uniwork and other photography related stuff. I also got myself a handy little fisheye2 lomo camera and a Camcaddie on the way in the mail, both from Ebay.
AUCB
UniWork
Still got a lot of work to do, but I am in the right direction on the Photography and Realism Unit. Finally got my camera back from having the sensor cleaned. I will not recomend going from a D300s to a D40, even if its only for 4 weeks. This week I will try to develop film taken with the Vest pocket kodak,127 film. Just some random London shots, hopefully they will come out good, the camera have not been used the last 40 years. It is strange, when you start a BA course you expect that you will take more photographs, epic fail, to much written work. Soon we are starting our essay tutorials. I am horrible at writing essays in norwegian, how is it going to be in english? I really hope that Nikon in not to long will realease a full frame camera, dual card slot, 1080p movie with 60fps. Here is some photos from the weekend to show how I live:
