Summer!

18th May 2012

Recently I have continued the work in the area of constructed landscapes both in and out of a fishtank experimenting with different materials and techniques. The work focuses on cultural landscape and identity where I try to create a classic Norwegian landcape. It is very hard to predict the outcome of the experimentation when I work in a fish tank as the view and water effects differently on each material. I ended up with a few different types of landscape where the last ended up as the exhibition ready print with a frame that took way too much time and effort to make. Full view of the images you can find in the Portfolio

Now its finally summer and I can relax.Got a Maimya 645 on the way in the mail, going to be good to have some new to work with over the summer. This summer I will spend 5 weeks around in Columbia with my friends which is going to be the first time I am outside Europe! The rest of the summer i will be working as I usually do, and try to make money to use on photography and other stuff that i absolutly dont need but just gadget stuff thats cool to have. Hopefully I will be able to make a new update in the end of the summer with some more constructed landscapes, as I have a few more fish tanks available, maybe a short movie from columbia as I am bringing my GoPro.

Have a great summer!

Recent work

27 January 2012

Recently I have been working with the units Themes and Responses and Contemporary Technologies. Its been a stressfull time since late september last year til now with all the work basically stealing my social life. Went home for two weeks in the christmas holidays which gave me a nice break from work. Good to see friends and family again.Looking forward to the easter holidays...

Themes and Responses

For Themes and responses I ended up making 3 final prints . Counstructing landscape in fishtanks. While Constructing the landscapes I am focusing on the memory and connection to a dream world setting, and try to create a fantasy place. Taking inspiration from artists such as Kim Keever, Mariele Neudecker, Terry Taylor and a book called Unconscious Phantasy of Riccardo steiner where he writes

" When we say that phantasies are not real, we mean that they don't have a physical existence in the world around us. In other words, we mean that we can't see them or hear them or touch them. If we can see or hear or touch something and, better still, smell it and taste it, then we have little doubt that about its reality. If not, its reality is brought into question. So one criterion is complicated by the fact that some people see and hear things that nobody else can see or hear."

I started of working in a small glass bole to see how it would be to work underwater. The first attempt turned out good.

This created the ground of my work and is what i kept building on. As the material floats it was simply just to flip the image around and do some minor editing.

I found out that i needed more space as it was to find small enough materials to fit the bole and I wanted more depht in the images. At home we had a aquarium in the attic and because i did not have a large fish-tank in England i choose to use the christmas holidays to get the final prints done. This is how it turned out:

This is how the workspace looked like:

Contemporary Technologies

Contemporary Technologies is the most frustrating unit I have been working with so far. Many times Themes and Responses got the main priority because I simply did not work with this unit. In the end i think it sorted out fine. For the unit each student had to hand in 5mb of data. I did not matter what as long as it was no more than 5mb. After everybody had handed in, we got back the folder of what everybody together had submitted and out of that we were going to make artwork. I started of with some recreation thoughts in a surreal illustrated way, but it did not really lead to more than this image

The folder was filled with all sorts of different strange things. In the end i came up with some dystopian, surreal, futuristic images.

I ended up with printing this on a A0 print as the final for this unit.
